Wellness is a success at Alcon

The Vitality health and wellness program is hard at work at Alcon, the global eye care leader, targeting individual health behavior and addressing all of the clinically documented drivers of health risk. The program customizes a health enhancement plan for each participant that addresses specific health characteristics and risk factors, then verifies and rewards positive change with appropriate incentives.

The percentage of Alcon employees participating in verified fitness activities has progressively increased each year over the three years since adoption of Vitality, reaching nearly 50 percent in 2010. Without active wellness intervention, individuals in employer populations typically transition over time into higher risk categories. In contrast, Alcon’s employees moved into lower risk levels for a multitude of conditions. For example, over half of the employees who were “high risk” in 2008 for high cholesterol and/or high blood pressure moved to “moderate” or “low risk” in 2010.

Healthier employees translate directly to a healthier bottom line for Alcon. In 2010 alone, the company saved an astounding $1.5 million in medical and pharmacy claims.

In recognition of their exceptional efforts, Alcon was awarded the 2011 C. Everett Koop National Health Award for demonstrating validated population health improvement and reducing medical costs.
